Chapter Thirty-Two

They thanked the Dwan DooVoo waiter profusely, and he gave John a card with a schedule for what John figured must be the Dwan DooVoo equivalent of AA meetings. After saying their goodbyes, they rushed into the repair shop and paid the Drellen mechanic in cash. John knew seconds counted in this situation. The police, or more bounty hunters, could appear at any turn. Or a citizen attempting to do the right thing could turn them in or take matters into their own hands if they recognized the pair. Only when they had gotten through the Gate to the Dolurulod system did John feel a little more relaxed. Fortunately, Meehix remembered that Gate combination without a hitch since she had used it numerous times to travel to Lagud.

Now they were only a matter of minutes from Meehix’s home planet, which had John stoked. Meehix—not so much. Aside from changing her bloodied clothes, she’d spent the entire trip digging through Ship’s databases, reading galactic news articles, and trying to figure out what the heck had happened to her title and status during the paltry few weeks she had been away.

“So you’re saying aim for the ears?” John asked Shippewa as he threw a right hook in the air, trying to envision himself battling more Drellen bounty hunters or bounty hunters in general.

“Yes, John. Statistically, more galactic species have sensitive nerve pathways prone to signal disruption in and around auditory appendages. It is similar to the mandibular branch in humans. However, while this is predominantly the case, it is not universal. Many species have no auditory organs, or their earlobes are not visible.”

“So if they have ears, aim for the ears, but if they don’t have ears, wing it?”

“Yes, John.”

“Look at this,” Meehix said, her voice tinged with suspicion. “The Gallacher Spire lists my suitcase as Relegated to Storage the same day I came to Earth. That makes absolutely no sense. Not only did I have that room rented indefinitely but I even told the desk clerk I’d be back the next day.”

John did push-ups. He was listening to her but couldn’t get over how great he felt. He was already on push-up number twenty-five. He’d never been able to do more than twenty-five push-ups in a row even when he was playing rugby. With video game all-nighters and the piles of junk food he’d consumed over the past year, he would have been surprised if he could pull off twenty. Now he was on thirty, and these weren’t wimpy partial or bent-back push-ups. He was going all the way down—nose to the floor—and back up, arms fully extended, back straight.

“Thirty-one, thirty-two, thirty-three, thirty-four…” he whispered, only now starting to feel the burn. He was going for fifty.

“What are you doing?” Meehix asked, annoyed. “Are you listening to me?”

“Yeah,” John said between presses. “I’m going for a new record.”

Forty-one, Forty-two, forty-three…

“I’m serious. I think there’s some kind of conspiracy going on. Someone set me up, and I’m really worried about my family.
